Queenstown Garden - 2020
Covid was difficult for everyone in different ways; my creativity was directed at developing a friends garden in return for free or discounted accommodation. The development of this Garden is ongoing and has spread over 3 years, the most recent development has been the building of a large terrace and retaining wall made from concrete blocks and engineered with reinforcing steel drilled into the bedrock which is incredibly shallow on this site. All the rock used to face the concrete was reclaimed by hand from other building sites around the Queenstown area over a 2 year period; much of which would have been buried under soil as a convenient way to be gotten rid of.
Further back in time the entire site was all grass with no boundary fence except that which divided it and its neighbour on one side, I have sealed and installed all fences myself, built all paths using sleepers and white gravel, rebuilt the driveway with adequate drainage and designed a planting scheme to build up privacy using a mix of native New Zealand and exotic plants. The planting has been an on going experiment trying to keep interest for the client who enjoys popping colour and contrast, dislikes Cabbage Trees and loves Toitoi's, while catering to the harsh subalpine environment of Queenstown Lakes District. I have also Painted the entire property inside and out doing all handy-work necessary for a 1960's Batch.
