Lanterns

The first lantern project isn't really a lantern but was inspired by a Poppy seed head shape that I wanted to make from recycled biscuit tins soldered together. After visiting a festival I wanted to inspire the feeling of a faery presence for children, as Tinkerbell in the story of Peter Pan sits in a lantern and by her Fae magic sets it aglow. I then cast some lead in a curved channel to make 'legs,' with rounded sides that would point outwardly on each corner of the poppy 'roof'. These legs hung down and came together to make the seed head shape and supported the Fae platform, also edged with the lead leg shaped strips and soldered in place.

I was then inspired to create a lantern from stained glass having seen the 2D process of foiling unfold. Using my cast lead in carved scrap wood process I made an artistic frame, cut and processed pieces of coloured glass to fit the gaps in the lead frame and soldered them in place. This was a painstaking process and was never finished, though I am open to improving the process.
